Pro Tips
- •For legal or academic documents, the bottom-center position is the most conventional.
- •Use the “Page X of Y” format when readers need to know total length — reports, manuals, theses.
- •If your PDF starts with a cover or title page, set the starting number to 0 so the first counted page is the actual content.
- •Font size 10–12 is standard for body documents. 14–16 works better for presentations.
- •Page numbers are added as a new layer — they don’t alter the original PDF content underneath.

When to Use PDF Page Numbering
Legal briefs and filings
Court rules often require page-numbered exhibits. Add numbers in the right format quickly, without uploading sensitive filings to a third-party service.
Academic papers and theses
Universities frequently require specific page numbering formats. Apply “Page X of Y” to your final PDF before submission.
Reports and business documents
Multi-page reports look more professional with consistent page numbering — essential for printed handouts and reference docs.
Combined PDF compilations
After merging multiple PDFs, re-number everything sequentially so the combined document reads cleanly from cover to back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The entire PDF manipulation happens in your browser using pdf-lib. Your document never leaves your device.
Will it work on password-protected PDFs?
No — you need to unlock the PDF first. Use our PDF Unlocker tool, then add page numbers.
Can I number only specific pages?
Currently this tool numbers all pages. To skip pages, use our PDF Splitter first to remove them, number the rest, then merge if needed.
What if my PDF already has page numbers?
The tool adds new numbers on top — you may end up with two sets. Either remove the existing layer first (with our PDF Editor) or just keep the original.
Can I customize the font?
Currently the tool uses a clean built-in font (Helvetica) for maximum compatibility. Font family selection is on the roadmap.
PDF Page Numbering vs Alternatives
Adding page numbers to PDFs is a common need — here’s where this tool fits.
Adobe Acrobat Pro
Industry standard
Key difference: Powerful with extensive customization, but requires a paid subscription. Overkill for adding page numbers to a single doc.
Online PDF services
Smallpdf, iLovePDF, etc.
Key difference: Convenient but require uploading your file to their servers — a privacy risk for sensitive contracts, legal docs, or medical records.
Microsoft Word + Export
Roundabout approach
Key difference: Works only if you have the original Word file. Doesn’t help when you receive a PDF you didn’t create.
Adds page numbers in your browser, no upload, no signup, multiple format options, instant download. Great for confidential documents.
